Injection-Induced Aseismic Slip in Tight Fractured Rocks

چکیده

Abstract We investigate the problem of fluid injection at constant pressure in a 2D Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) with randomly oriented and uniformly distributed frictionally-stable fractures. show that this shares similarities simpler scenario single planar shear fracture, investigated by Bhattacharya Viesca (2019); (2021) whose results are here extended to include closed form solutions for aseismic moment as function injected volume $$V_\mathrm{{inj}}$$ V inj . Notably, we demonstrate hydro-mechanical response fractured rock mass is first order governed dimensionless parameter $$\mathcal {T}$$ T associated favourably fractures: low values (critically stressed conditions) lead fast migration slip from point due elastic stress transfer on critically In case, therefore, there no effect DFN percolation number spatio-temporal evolution slip. On other hand, marginally pressurized conditions ( {T} \gtrsim 1$$ ? 1 ), slipping patch lags behind region hence affects medium. Furthermore, scales $$\propto V_\mathrm{{inj}}^2$$ ? 2 both limiting conditions, similarly case fracture subjected same condition. The factor proportionality, however, depends characteristics while it appears be only mildly dependent properties conditions.

INDUCED SEISMICITY. Seismicity triggered by fluid injection-induced aseismic slip.

Anthropogenic fluid injections are known to induce earthquakes. The mechanisms involved are poorly understood, and our ability to assess the seismic hazard associated with geothermal energy or unconventional hydrocarbon production remains limited. We directly measure fault slip and seismicity induced by fluid injection into a natural fault. We observe highly dilatant and slow [~4 micrometers pe...

An aseismic slip transient on the North Anatolian Fault

Constellations of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites with short repeat time acquisitions allow exploration of active faults behavior with unprecedented temporal resolution. Along the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) in Turkey, an 80 km long section has been creeping at least since the 1944, Mw 7.3 earthquake near Ismetpasa, with a current Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR)-deriv...

Elastic waves in fractured rocks under periodic compression

Background: One of the current problems in studying the mechanical properties and behavior of structurally inhomogeneous media with cracks is the characterization of acoustic wave propagation. This is especially important in Geomechanics and prognosis of earthquakes. Methods: In this work, the authors propose an approach that could simplify characterization of wave propagation in medium with cr...

Particle-tracking simulations of anomalous transport in hierarchically fractured rocks

Complex topology of fracture networks and interactions between transport processes in a fracture and the ambient un-fractured rock (matrix) combine to render modeling solute transport in fractured media a challenge. Classical approaches rely on both strong assumptions of either limited or full diffusion of solutes in the matrix and simplified fracture configurations. We analyze fracture-matrix ...
